Volunteer Powell River is a program of the Powell River and District United Way that supports and develops volunteerism throughout our community.

Since opening in 2005, the volunteer centre has registered over 600 volunteers, connecting them with many organizations to fill positions such as organizing events to fostering animals to office support. Volunteers keep a community strong and vibrant, and it is this that the Volunteer Centre strives to highlight and build upon.

Volunteerism is essential in an isolated community such as ours. The following presents just a few examples of how volunteerism benefits our community.

Volunteerism...
  • entertains and educates visitors and local residents about Powell River through our many festivals and events.
  • helps people with disabilities cope in an environment developed for able-bodied inhabitants.
  • involves seniors in the community, which allows them to use their well-developed skills, keeps them connected to their neighbours, and maintains and enhances their health and well-being.
  • helps save lives through the St. John Ambulance brigade, emergency social services, auxiliary police, and volunteer firefighters.
  • enhances citizenship by communities working together to help make a difference in the lives of many, creating an environment comfortable to live in for all.
  • helps people to connect with others and to contribute to the community in positive ways.

These things are essential to a happy and healthy life.

In the coming year, we hope to register many more volunteers in Powell River showcasing the strength of volunteerism in our community, and illustrate that a healthy community is one in which people help and take care of each other.
