Therapeutic riding is a form of therapy using horses to help children and adults with physical, mental, emotional and learning disabilities. Currently, more than 75 riders participate in programs each week, provided to all age groups. A list of 80 volunteers help put on the programs, assist the clients and look after the horses.
"Think of being in a wheelchair all your life," explains Lynne Nott, PR Therapeutic Riding President. "Now think of being on something that not only puts you above everyone else, but gives you an idea of what it would be like to be walking."
It's more than height and mobility though -- the interaction with the horse, and with the other children, helps develop self confidence. And the physical challenges of riding helps develop balance and coordination, improves muscle tone and strength, and gives the rider a sense of achievement.
A saddle can cost anywhere from $800 to $1,500. Helmets for the rider can cost anywhere up to $150, then of course there are bridles, reins, shoeing, feed, and shelter. Don't forget blankets, veterinary costs and bedding. Another significant cost is training and certifying the instructors. "As on June 2007 we completed an addition attached to our indoor arena and now have washrooms, a kitchen, a ready room for the riders and a viewing area for families," says Lynne. "It was an incredible project. And we are always working to improve our stable, pastures and fencing.
"Without the United Way, a lot of this would not happen."
