Despite the fact that Powell River is a wonderful place to live, many in our community do not have an equal chance at the "good life". They are caught in a cycle of poverty and are excluded from the many opportunities our community offers. There are children who go to bed hungry and thousands of familes who spend half of their gross income on rent alone.
In addition to funding the 10 member agencies, the Powell River & District United Way also provides one-time assistance to those in need through the Helping Hand Fund. Throughout the year, the United Way helps cover a portion of the cost for much needed dental work (including dentures), prescription eyewear, medication, medical care and associated travel costs, counseling as well as the basics of life, food and warmth.
United Way believes everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and that everyone has a right to live in a community that is safe, embraces differences and offers individual opportunities to feel connected.
