Over two million Canadians have diabetes and over 1,000 people in Powell River utilize the services supported by the Canadian Diabetes Association.
The CDA is a valuable resource to the Powell River General Hospital diabetes program, supporting patients and their families through the provisions of equipment and teaching aids. Things as simple as food models makes the education that much easier for people who have just received the shocking news that they have developed a chronic illness. Something as simple as a portion size suddenly becoming an overwhelming problem. The numerous pieces of display equipment provided by CDA assist people in finding the right piece of information that is specific to their personal needs.
CDA has also provided the hospital with audio visual equipment that helps makes day-to-day teaching much more effective; without the CDA's help this would be extremely difficult.
CDA funds are used to provide the Powell River Public Library with videos, cookbooks and other diabetes-related printed material. The CDA continues to educate the public and support local citizens with diabetes by inviting health care professionals to our communities to share their expertise with members and their families. They also offer financial assistance to children who wish to attend diabetic camps in the summer months.
Finding a cure for this disease, which has reached epidemic proportions, remains the goal. Through the financial contributions to Candian research scientists, CDA is doing it's part, as a community, to achieve this goal.
